Lake Mansfield

The approach to this residence is discrete and understated along a gently winding driveway through a wooded, pastoral setting. Passing though a majestic stand of hemlocks which serve as a gateway, the house makes a dramatic appearance. The massing is striking, recalling the simple dynamics of constructivist volumes with a definite nod to sleek yacht design.

Siting the home on 30 acres required careful planning and analysis. A sloping hill meandering down to a lake and heavily wooded acreage and a complicated program required precise analysis to allow for future development.

The exterior surfaces of this home form a study in refined minimalist textures and patterning. The entry facades employ a rain screen of interlocking woven panels and the upper level is wrapped in tightly spaced vertical slats. The matte black surfaces create a subtle prismatic interplay of dark shade and bright highlights. This variegated use of wood siding envelopes the entire home. The interior is organized around two long corridors bounded by tall windows which frame views to prominent landscapes and features beyond.

There is a dramatic double height screened in porch which connects to the gracious living room through telescopic sliding glass doors. When opened, the interconnection of spaces provides fresh breezes to the interior. The porch’s direct relation to the living room imbues it with a sense of elegance and connection with the interior.
