LEED Silver Benson Visitor Center & Gallery

This environmentally progressive LEED-Silver structure showcases the state-of-the-art “green” systems for a non-profit in upstate New York. This is the first LEED-certified building in the Hudson Valley.

The building’s design is formally stunning and environmentally sophisticated. The center is a study in natural textures and innovative contemporary form with glass set against natural stone walls. The stone clad slats are reminiscent of nearby horse fences. The building and parking areas are carefully set into the ground in dynamic harmony with the site.

Green components include a planted roof that reduces heat load and manages roof water runoff, solar power and daylight sensors to monitor and adjust electric lighting levels in accordance to the accompanying natural daylight. The building also features many recycled materials including cotton insulation from old blue jeans, recycled concrete counter tops and post-consumer recycles “mushroom wood” for the decorative walls. The reception desk is covered with natural horsehair, a repidly renewable resource. The center also has ample operable windows for fresh air ventilation. The exterior stone banding shields the glass walls from direct solar gain, providing a shaded and cool interior.

The Center is an important public venue for concerts, lectures, readings, dance recitals, and other events. In addition there is a gift shop and cafe with spacious outdoor terraces.
