The Fields Sculpture Park
Working with 50 acres of farmland, the initial project was to place 12 sculptures on loan from renowned international gallerist Andre Emmerich. Circulation routes were determined through wheat and corn fields, carving out “rooms” for major works by Alexander Calder and Alexander Lieberman, among others to be sensitively installed.
By articulating planting patterns, meandering through woodlands and numerous open meadows, nature has been brought to play for a careful crafted experience for viewing art and the landscape.
The Fields has presented an impressive array of works of important and established contemporary artists, including Carl Andre, Tony Cragg, Olafur Elliason, Magdalena Abakanowicz, and Dennis Oppenheim. The first Bernar Venet exhibition in the United States was at The Fields.
After establishing the infrastructure for The Fields in 1996, Kathleen Triem was named the first Executive Director and Chief Curator. A series of experimental shows was initiated including a multi-part series entitled “Ignoring Boundaries”, which brought a ground breaking variety of multimedia installations in the context of an outdoor venue. The Fields had thus embarked on a mission to present audacious work by younger artists among the work of more established artists.
